The 1915 Edition of The Building Estimator's Reference Book

A great resource for building restoration projects

Get transported back in time, with this first edition of The Building Estimator's Reference Book. A time when the steam engine was the current technology and internal combustion engines was considered a “new” technology. A time when craft methodology was passed down from generation to generation, and what was thought of as “new” methods are now considered quaint and outdated. It provides interesting background information, and details on the projects that Walker had worked on; the problems they encountered, and solutions they devised.

Here are some examples:

“Cutting Stone from Batesville, Ark., Quarries. This stone known as Batesville stone was used throughout the Arkansas State Capitol Building, with the exception of the dome, which was Bedford stone. Batesville stone is very hard, almost like marble and when hit with a hammer rings like a bell.”

“There were no air tools on the job and it was all cut by hand.”

“… From each platform narrow gauge tracks extended to the rear portion of the dome, so the stone was put directly on the small cars running on this track and pushed to the nearest point of operation, where it was picked up by the setting derrick and hoisted into place.”
